I recently came across this website VideoEle . VideoEle is a website with many videos for Spanish learners from complete beginner level (A1) to advanced level (B2). All the videos are about different current and cultural topics from the Spanish speaking world and the rhythm and content is suitable for the different levels. There are transcripts for every video and some of them also have guidelines and additional activities for you to check.

How to practice my listening skills in Spanish

Hola amigos,

Espero que todos estén muy bien.

Today I was thinking that mastering yous listening skills in a foreign language can be quite hard, especially if you don't enjoy learning languages using auditory methods. However, listening is a very important skill, you can become familiar with different accents, you can learn new vocabulary, and it can help your speaking skills in a huge way.

If you are not a big fan of learning languages by listening or if you are struggling a bit with it, here there are a few things that may help you find a way to do it:

• Watch youtube videos in Spanish
• Listen to music in Spanish
• Make your goal of the week to watch a movie or documentary in Spanish, there are many available on Netflix and youtube. Depending on your level you can watch them with subtitles on your language, Spanish or without any subtitles
• Listen to music in Spanish, it can be while driving, cleaning your house, or when you are working out. You can also listen to songs and look up their lyrics
• Go to salsa lessons
• Find a language partner who is a native speaker. Many language schools and universities offer this service for free
• Start watching a televovela, tv series or news in Spanish, even 5 minutes a week will make a huge difference

Once you learn the sounds of the letters in Spanish it can be a lot easier to pronounce new words.

Today we are going to check the sounds of the vowels in Spanish and compare them to similar sounds in English words.

• A in Spanish is like the a sound in CAT
• E is ike the initial e sound in ELEPHANT
• I is like the ee sound in the word KEEP
• O is like the short o sound in the word POT
• U is like the double oo sound in MOO (like the sound cows make)

Viajando por el mundo hispano - La Catedral de Sal en Colombia - Traveling through the Spanish speaking world

Today we are going to travel the Salt Cathedral in Colombia, la Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá. This wonder of the world (maravilla del mundo) was built underground in mine tunnels. This beautiful attraction is not far from Bogotá and you can take the train to get there, so if you are ever in Colombia don't miss this maravilla del mundo.

Falsos amigos en español - Discusión / False cognates in Spanish - Discusión

Hola amigos,

Today's false cognate or falso amigo en español is the word discusión.

Discusión looks very similar to the word discussion, and even though it can be used with that meaning, most of the times, the most popular use of discusión is used with the meaning of "argument". Discusión can be used to refer to a discussion as mentioned above, as long as it is used in the right context talking about a topic that is being discussed among several people.

Ejemplo: (discusión as argument) Los escuché discutir acaloradamente toda la tarde.

Ejemplo: (discusión as discussion) Los profesores discutieron los temas relevantes a los problemas de la educación

Receta fácil para el pisco sour - Easy recipe for pisco sour

Hola a todos,

El pisco sour es un trago disfrutado por muchos especialmente en Peru y Chile. Aquí les dejo una receta fácil para hacer en casa.

Ingredientes:

• Una botella de pisco chileno o peruano (dependiendo del país puede que lo encuentren en botellerías supermercados, tiendas latinas o por internet)
• Azúcar flor
• 5 limones
• Hielo

Preparación:

• Exprima los limones hasta que tenga al menos un vaso de jugo de limón
• Coloque el jugo en una licuadora
• Ponga un vaso de hielo en la licuadora
• Ponga tres medidas de pisco o pisco a gusto (las medidas totals deberían hacer 3 copas del trago)
• Ponga 4 cucharadas de azúcar flor (se puede poner más dependiendo del gusto)
• Mezcle todo junto en la licuadora hasta que los hielos queden bien picados
• Ponga azúcar flor en un plato moje un poquito el borde de dos copas de champaña y páselas por el azúcar hasta que queden blancas
• Sirva el pisco sour y disfrute

Falsos amigos en español - embarazado/a / False cognates in Spanish - embarazado/a

Hola a todos,

We are going to start checking false cognates in Spanish and English or "falsos amigos", these are words that are written very similarly in Spanish and English but mean things that can be very different.

Today's falso amigo is embarazado/a , embarazado/a may look very similar to the English word embarrassed, however, It means something totally different.

Embarazada is translated into English as pregnant, so do not mistake it with the word embarrassed. The translation of embarrassed in Spanish is avergonzado/a.

You can use the phrase "situación embarazosa" but always in this context  and to talk about an embarrassing or uncomfortable situation.

Lugares para viajar - Málaga

Hola a todos,

Hoy voy a recomendarles un lugar para viajar y practicar su español. La ciudad es Málaga en Andalucía en el sur de España.

Málaga es un lugar precioso y muy completo, tiene playas, lugares históricos, museos, y mucha tradiciones. Personalmente les recomendaría que si no van a la Feria de Málaga en agosto que vayan antes de Julio y después de agosto, si no son fanáticos de los turistas o el calor extreme. Junio es un muy buen tiempo para visitar.

Entre los lugares recomendados para visitar tienen que ir al museo de Pablo Picasso, al Alcazaba,Gigralfaro, y Mijas (un pueblo muy típico y bonito cerca de Malaga) entre otros lugares maravillosos.

In our section for recommended websites for learning and practising Spanish, I am recommending today the website Rockalingua.

This website it is aimed for helping young learners practising and learning their Spanish skills, I have been using it with my young learner classes and every week they request to listen one of the Spanish songs, they are very catchy, even for adults, so if you are an adult young at heart and want to practise Spanish with some catchy music as well you can use these resources. It has different sections and it is good for different types of learners as well, as it has worksheets and games in Spanish.

Supersticiones: Si te pica la mano derecha no te la rasques - Superstitions: Do not scratch your right hand when it is itchy

Today we are going to talk about one of our Spanish speaking world superstitions.

This one has to do with itchy hands, it can be a bit different from country to country, but it is usually very similar everywhere. All my life I have been told that if your right hand is itchy you would not scratch it, instead you should put it in your pocket as it means money is on the way for you.

"No te rasques la mano derecha, ponla en tu bolsillo porque viene dinero en camino"

Websites recomendados para aprender español - Duolingo / Recommended websites for learning Spanish - Duolingo

Hola a todos,

As you all know using new technologies for learning languages has become part of our world culture and very useful for learning Spanish. I would like to share with you periodically different websites and apps that you can use to do extra practice for your Spanish at home or when you are on the go.

Today's website and app is Duolingo .  This website was first recommended to me by a student, I started using it for Italian before my holiday and I have been recommended it to family and friends. This website may not be new for some of you, but I have realised that there are still a lot of people that have not heard about it and once start using it find it very good for extra practice.

Duolingo, as a language program, uses your first language to help you learn a second language and gives you feedback straight away; it also sends you reminders if you need to practice a certain topic and you can set daily goals, you feel like you are learning through a game. In my opinion it is great for beginners or students who would like to brush up their skills and don't have a lot of time to study at home.

El pretérito indefinido versus el pretérito imperfecto - The Spanish preterite versus the imperfect tense

Las diferencias entre el pretérito indefinido y el pretérito imperfecto para hablar en pasado en español pueden algunas veces ser un poquito confusas cuando estás aprendiendo en español.

Durante mis años enseñando español he descubierto que hay un par de diferencias que pueden ayudar a los alumnos a tener una idea más claras de cuándo usamos el pretérito indefinido y cuándo usamos el imperfecto. Aquí se las dejo:

Pretérito indefinido	Pretérito imperfecto
Se usa cuando hablamos de acciones terminadas en el pasado   Ejemplo:   ·         Terminé todos mis exámenes la semana pasada	Se usa cuando hablamos de acciones no terminadas o que han sido interrumpidas   Ejemplo:   ·         Iba a llamar a Juana cuando me mandó un mensaje
Se usa cuando hablamos de una acción puntual en pasado, cuando usamos fechas determinadas y somos específicos   Ejemplos:   ·         Ayer fui al mercado ·         Me gradué de la universidad en 1997	Se usa para hablar de acciones habituales en el pasado. Parecido al uso del used to en inglés   Ejemplos:   ·         Ibamos mucho a la playa cuando eramos niños ·         Cuando trabajaba en esa empresa siempre comía en la cafetería

Uso del subjuntivo o indicativo + cuando

Hola a todos,

Cuándo usar el subjuntivo en español puede ser un gran dilema, pero hay formas simples de entender cuando usarlo y cuando no usarlo en ciertos casos.

Si usamos el subjuntivo o indicativo con cuando en español tenemos que tomar en cuenta las diferencias de intención y de lo que quieres comunicar, como ya lo habíamos visto en el caso del subjuntivo o indicativo con aunque 

Usamos el subjuntivo con cuando en español si estamos hablando de un caso hipotético, y usamos el indicativo con cuando  si estamos hablando de algo que hacemos habitualmente y es un hecho.

Subjuntivo + cuando	Indicativo + cuando
Me comeré un pan cuando tenga hambre *En este caso la persona está diciendo que si le da hambre se comerá un pan pero todavía no tiene hambre y no sabe si tendrá	Me como un pan cuando tengo hambre *En este caso la persona está diciendo que siempre que le da hambre se come un pan

Los beneficios que tiene para nuestra mente el ser bilingüe

Hola a todos,

Hace unos días encontré este reportaje online con una imagen sobre cómo funciona nuestro cerebro si somos bilingües y las ventajas que tiene.

En la foto se describe como el hablar un segundo idioma nos ayuda en los siguientes aspectos:

• Desarollar nuestro pensamiento
• Entender problemas y conceptos matemáticos
• Tener un mayor entendimiento de otras culturas
• Incrementar nuestra comprensión lectora
• Desarrollar el uso de la lógica
• Enfocarnos en recordar cosas y la toma de decisiones

Una mente bilingüe también es más resistente a enfermedades de deterioro cerebral como el Alzheimer y el desempeño academico tiende a ser mejor en estudiantes en programas bilingües.

Técnicas para aprender español y estilos de aprendizaje

Hola amigos,

Cuando uno aprende idiomas una de las primeras cosas que es importante saber es de qué forma aprendes mejor y qué estilo de aprendizaje se acomoda al tuyo; para algunos estudiantes es mejor usar atículos visuales, escuchar audios, experimentar con objetos o hacer cosas combinadas.

Una vez que saben qué estilo les viene mejor pueden descubrir qué técnicas o cosas deben hacer para estudiar español y practicar por su cuenta. Por ejemplo, yo aprendo mejor cuando hay estímulos visuales o kinestéticos con los que pueda practicar más activamente. Cuando estaba aprendiendo inglés leía historias cortas o cuentos que ya conocía en inglés para poder practicar y aprender vocabulario nuevo, veía series de television en inglés, y también aprendí muchísimo cuando me fui de intercambio a Estados Unidos y pude practicar activamente con el idioma.
