How to do small talk in Spanish - Useful phrases in Spanish to meet people

Hola amigos,

When you are just starting learning Spanish, you always feel like you need some extra phrases (questions and answers) so you can start talking to the native Spanish speakers and communicate. Here you have a list of some useful Spanish phrases to use in different contexts when you are just starting meeting people.

Hola: Hello

¿Cómo estás?: How are you?

Bien, ¿y tú? : I am fine and you?

¿Cómo te llamas? / ¿Cuál es tu nombre?: What is your name?

Me llamo ..... : My name is ....

¿De dónde eres?: Where are you from?

Soy de Escocia / Inglaterra / Estados Unidos / Francia / Alemania / Los Países Bajos :
I'm from Scotland/  England / The United States/ France  /   Germany / The Netherlands

¿A qué te dedicas?: What do you do for a leaving?

Soy estudiante / profesor (a) / ingeniero (a) / camarero (a) / informático (a):
I'm a student    /   teacher     /    engineer   / waiter - waitress / IT

¿Tienes facebook/ móvil/ twitter/ instagram etc? : Do you have .....?

¿Te puedo agregar a facebook / twitter / instagram?: Can I add you to ...?

¿Me darías tu número de teléfono?: Would you give me your phone number?


*Remember that the LL sound in Spanish can be like a soft J sound in English or a Y sound in English.
*Remember that for the female version of a word most of the time you need to either add an A at the end, if the word finishes in a consonant, like in profesor / profesora, or you need to replace the last vowel for A, like in camarero / camarera.

Viajando por el mundo hispano - La Catedral de Sal en Colombia - Traveling through the Spanish speaking world

Hola amigos,

Today we are going to travel the Salt Cathedral in Colombia, la Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá. This wonder of the world (maravilla del mundo) was built underground in mine tunnels. This beautiful attraction is not far from Bogotá and you can take the train to get there, so if you are ever in Colombia don't miss this maravilla del mundo.

Lugares para viajar - Málaga

Hola a todos,

Hoy voy a recomendarles un lugar para viajar y practicar su español. La ciudad es Málaga en Andalucía en el sur de España.

Málaga es un lugar precioso y muy completo, tiene playas, lugares históricos, museos, y mucha tradiciones. Personalmente les recomendaría que si no van a la Feria de Málaga en agosto que vayan antes de Julio y después de agosto, si no son fanáticos de los turistas o el calor extreme. Junio es un muy buen tiempo para visitar.

Entre los lugares recomendados para visitar tienen que ir al museo de Pablo Picasso, al Alcazaba,Gigralfaro, y Mijas (un pueblo muy típico y bonito cerca de Malaga) entre otros lugares maravillosos.

Travel and survival phrases in Spanish 2.0

Hola a todos,

I have recently been on a holiday to Italy and I can say it was the very first time I have been in a country in which I do not speak the language fluently. I know Spanish is very similar to Italian, but even though I could understand a fair amount,  as many words are the same in Spanish, I could not reply the way I would want to, sometimes get lost in translation, or I would find myself missing the odd word to be able to communicate in the foreign language. So, I thought about making a new list for all of you with more Spanish traveling and survival phrases that I kept on needing in my holiday and that I believe would be useful for you for your trips to Spanish speaking countries.

Destinos - Una telenovela para aprender español

Hola a todos,

Not long ago one of my students mentioned to me that he was watching Destinos to practice Spanish.

This is a great soap opera or telenovela designed for Spanish learners, it  tells the story of Raquel, a lawyer, who has been hired by Don Fernando to solve a mistery related to his family. Raquel has to traveled to Spain, Argentina, Puerto Rico and Mexico to solve the secret, so you get to listen to different accents at the same time you learn more about Hispanic culture.

¿Va a ser el español el idioma más hablado en Estados Unidos el 2050?

Hola,

En los últimos meses he leído muchos artículos diciendo que el 2050 el español será el idioma más hablado en Estados Unidos. Para serles sincera estas noticias me tienen muy entusiasmada y me encantaría ver el día en que llegue a pasar esto.

Aquí les voy a contar una experiencia personal reciente que me ha hecho pensar muchísimo en esta situación. En noviembre del año pasado fui de vacaciones a Florida, ya había tenido la suerte de estar allí un par de veces. Esta última vez me llamó muchísimo la atención que la cantidad de hablantes de español nativos o no nativos ha aumentado considerablemente en los últimos 3 años (desde la última vez que fui), en muchísimas de las tiendas y los parques de diversión el idioma que más se escuchaba era el español e incluso en muchísimas tiendas me hablaban directo en español, mira que hasta reconocen a los hablantes nativos. Con esto me di cuenta que tal vez en algunas decadas el español será el idioma más hablado en Estados Unidos y que cada vez más personas lo estarán aprendiendo como idioma extranjero.
